Abstract: ObjectiveTo evaluate feeding indexes of infants aged 0 to 36 months in Guangdong Province and assess feeding behaviors.MethodsMultistage random sampling method was used to select children aged 0-36 months from a metropolis,middle-sized city, and rural area of Guangdong Province.Basic information and food consumption of the subjects were investigated by questionnaire survey. Based on the standard for infant and child feeding index(ICFI) score recommended by China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, ICFI scores of children aged 0 to 36 months in Guangdong Province were evaluated.ResultsA total of 1 447 infants and young children were investigated, including 761 males(52.6%) and 686 females(47.4%); 64.3%(930/1 447) were aged 12-36 months. Breastfeeding rates of children aged 0-5, 6-8, 9-11, and 12-36 months were 84.8%(224/264), 58.2%(82/141), 34.9%(38/109), and 6.6%(57/859), respectively. With the increase of age, the scores of beans, eggs, fish, meat and food diversity increased. The total qualified rate of ICFI was 75.0%(1 030/1 373). The ICFI scores of children aged 0-5, 6-8, 9-11, and 12-36 months were(1.70±0.72),(6.07±2.29),(7.38±1.81), and(8.94±1.63), and the qualified rates of ICFI were 84.8%, 28.4%, 49.5%, and 82.9%, respectively. The differences in the ICFI and qualified rates of ICFI were statistically significant between different age groups( both P<0.01). The ICFI scores and qualified rates of ICFI in metropolis and middle-sized city were significantly higher than those in rural area( both P<0.01).ConclusionThe feeding behavior of infants and children aged 0-36 months in Guangdong Province needs to be improved. Mothers of infants and young children in rural areas and aged 6-8, 9-11 months should increase the variety of supplementary foods.
