Abstract: Objective To investigate the current status and identify the influencing factors of work adaptation among patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) following their return to work. Methods A convenience sampling method was employed to recruit patients diagnosed with SSNHL who received treatment at the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangsu University between January 2023 and March 2025. Participants were stratified into a mild hearing impairment group and a moderate-to-severe hearing impairment group based on the severity of their hearing deficit. The current status of work adaptation post-return was evaluated utilizing a standardized Work Adaptation Assessment Scale. Univariate and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to elucidate the variables influencing post-return work adaptation. Results The mean score for work adaptation in the mild impairment group was (4.72±0.24), whereas the moderate-to-severe impairment group yielded a mean score of (3.08±0.31). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that communication barriers (β'=0.048), psychological health issues (β'=0.168), nature of employment (β'=-0.078, -0.076), and social support (β'=0.127, 0.382) emerged as significant predictors of work adaptation scores in patients with mild hearing impairment (all P<0.05). Conversely, tinnitus (β'=0.175), vertigo (β'=0.174), communication barriers (β'=0.246), psychological health issues (β'=0.174), nature of employment (β'=-0.193, -0.223), and social support (β'=0.161, 0.233) constituted significant determinants of work adaptation scores among patients with moderate-to-severe hearing impairment (all P<0.05). Conclusion Tinnitus, vertigo, communication barriers, psychological health issues, nature of employment, and social support act as critical determinants influencing the work adaptation of SSNHL patients returning to the workforce. The implementation of targeted interventions tailored to these specific factors is imperative; such measures may not only prevent patients from entering a detrimental psychosocial cycle and preserve their holistic well-being, but also facilitate the restoration of occupational capacity. Consequently, this promotes successful reintegration into the workforce, optimizes the utilization of societal labor resources, and fosters stable socioeconomic development.
